Society of Mary in Spain

Joan of  Lestonnac's enthusiasm for the education of young people to reach further people was a call for the growth of the Society of Mary, which spread rapidly throughout France and later in Spain.

In 1650, ten years after the death of its Founder, the nuns of the French city of Béziers founded the first convent school in Barcelona. TEACHING AND LEARNING»- was the name that the people of Barcelona gave to the school and the street where it was located–. This expression has been maintained over time and means a way of educating young women in a comprehensive way.

The nuns of Barcelona created their first foundation in Tudela in 1687; from which the Company of Mary expanded across the Spanish mainland and Latin America.

The mission of the Society of Mary in Spain is: "to evangelize as educators in the service of the faith that bears fruit in works of justice."

Today this mission covers other areas of non-formal education such as:

The Society of Mary‘s own projects in Spain:

Social projects in which the Company of Mary participates:

Our Colleges and University Halls of Residence:

The Company of Mary also chooses to take an active role in guiding and accompanying young people. In order to take care of this important stage in the formation of the person, places and environments are needed that favour and foster this process. Taking this into account, we consider Schools and University Halls of Residence a suitable area to carry out this educational project with university students and a privileged platform for evangelisation.
